JISC Collections negotiates deal for Nineteenth Century Collections Online

Gale, part of Cengage Learning and a publisher of research and reference resources, has welcomed JISC Collections’ endorsement of Nineteenth Century Collections Online (NCCO), a multi-year global publishing programme that offers researchers and students digital access to a comprehensive collection of nineteenth century materials.

As part of this new agreement, JISC Collections has negotiated discounted pricing for higher education institutions in the UK that opt to purchase either the first four or first eight archives in the programme. Significant discounts for archives I-IV and I-VIII are based on the number of participating institutions, and range between 30 and 55 per cent.

Nineteenth Century Collections Online unites multiple, distinct archives into a single resource offering researchers and students access to a wide range of primary sources from the 'long' 19th century (1789-1914) and beyond, including books and newspapers to manuscripts, photographs and maps.

Archives published in the programme include works in western as well as non-western languages and are sourced from rare collections at libraries and other institutions around the globe. Selected with the guidance of an international team of expert advisors, these primary sources are invaluable for a wide range of academic disciplines and areas of study.

The first eight archives in the programme and offered to higher education institutions in the UK at a special price are:

•     British Politics and Society;
•     European Literature, 1790-1840: The Corvey Collection;
•     Asia and the West: Diplomacy and Cultural Exchange;
•     British Theatre, Music, and Literature: High and Popular Culture;
•     Europe and Africa: Commerce, Christianity, Civilization, and Conquest;
•     Photography: The World Through the Lens;
•     Science, Technology and Medicine, 1780-1925; and
•     Women: Transnational Networks.

In addition to the 20 million pages of content within the archives, the resource is built on an innovative technology platform that features a range of tools to support teaching, learning and research. By negotiating special pricing for Nineteenth Century Collections Online, JISC Collections is making these unique collections more widely available to the UK academic community.
